Produce Packaging Glossary

The words used in produce shipping containers, in plain English.

Produce packaging has its own vocabulary, and almost none of it is written down anywhere a buyer can find it. A grower switching cartons for the first time in twenty years gets handed terms like eco modulation, hydro cooling and countervailing duty and is expected to already know them.

This is the reference we wished existed. Forty odd terms, defined the way someone on a packing line would explain them, with a note on why each one matters when it matters.

Where a term is contested or where we do not have a settled answer, we say so rather than guessing.

MATERIALS AND CONTAINER TYPES

Wax coated corrugated

A paperboard carton treated with paraffin wax so it can survive moisture. It has been the default produce shipping container for roughly forty to fifty years. The wax is what makes it work in a cooler and it is also what makes it un-recyclable, because the wax contaminates the fiber stream at the mill.

Coated fiberboard composite

A paperboard carton with a non wax barrier coating, often plastic based. It is frequently where a grower lands after leaving wax. Because it combines materials that have to be separated to be recycled, it is exposed to fee penalties under extended producer responsibility programs in states that have adopted them.

Plastic corrugated

A fluted plastic sheet, structurally similar to corrugated paperboard but made from plastic rather than fiber. It does not absorb water, so it does not soften or delaminate in wet conditions.

Single polymer, or mono material

A package made entirely from one type of plastic, with no mixed layers, coatings or laminates. Mono material packaging can be recycled as a single stream without separation, which is what makes it easier to recover than a composite.

Polypropylene, or PP

The plastic most commonly used in plastic corrugated produce boxes. It is also the resin named in the 2026 United States trade orders on imported corrugated boxes from China.

Food grade

Material manufactured to a standard that permits direct or indirect contact with food. Not all recycled plastic corrugated is food grade, and the distinction matters when the box holds unwrapped produce.

Regrind

Plastic that has been ground down for reuse in manufacturing. Regrind of known origin, recovered from your own supply chain, is a different material from regrind bought on the open scrap market, where the input history is unknown.

Recycled content

The share of a finished product made from recovered material rather than virgin resin. A recycled content claim on its own says nothing about where the material came from or what grade it returns to.

Down-cycling

Recycling a material into something of lower value than what it started as. A box recycled into a park bench has been downcycled. A box recycled into another box has not.

RPC: reusable plastic container

A rigid plastic crate that circulates through a pool, gets washed between uses, and is returned rather than recycled. Common in retail produce supply chains. The economics depend on the wash infrastructure and the return logistics.

Crate pool

The shared inventory of reusable containers that a pool operator rents to growers and retailers. Pools run short during peak seasons, which is when a grower most needs them.

Wire-bound crate

A shipping container built from thin wood veneer slats bound together with steel wire and staples. The gaps between slats provide ventilation, and the gap width varies by design depending on the commodity. Wood veneer handles moisture well, which is why the format survived in wet produce long after cardboard alternatives appeared. Still used for sweet corn and green beans, and expensive relative to the alternatives.

Bruce box, or Bruce crate

A specific container style, traditionally a wire-bound wooden crate and now widely manufactured as a heavy duty wax coated corrugated box. Like the bushel, it is used as a sizing unit rather than a single fixed size, so suppliers list fractional variants such as a 1/2 Bruce and a 4/5 Bruce.

Corrugated sheet

Plastic corrugated sold flat rather than as a finished container, used for signage, layer pads, dividers, dunnage and light fabrication.

Clamshell

A hinged retail container, usually holding berries, tomatoes or cut produce. Distinct from a shipping carton, which is what carries clamshells to the store.

COLD CHAIN AND HANDLING

Hydro cooling

A cooling method that pours near freezing water over harvested produce, typically for around an hour, to pull field heat out fast. It is used on sweet corn and a range of other commodities.

Fun Fact: Hydro cooling is the condition that settled the wax argument decades ago. A wax carton cannot survive it, which is why corn runs in wood, in reusable crates, or in plastic, and effectively never in wax.

Icing, and top ice

Adding ice directly into or on top of a packed container to hold temperature through transit and storage. Iced product is by definition wet product, for as long as the ice lasts.

Re icing

Adding fresh ice to product that has already been packed and has sat. Whether you can re ice in the original container or have to transfer to a new one is a real operating cost, and it depends entirely on whether the container survived the first pass.

Wet chain

Any part of a supply chain where the product, the container, or both are wet. Hydro cooled produce, iced produce and seafood all move through a wet chain.

The cooler

The refrigerated room where packed product waits to be sold and shipped. Time in the cooler is where packaging either holds up or does not, and it is the part of the process a box buyer rarely watches.

Shelf life, and healthy shelf life

Shelf life is how long product remains saleable. Healthy shelf life, a narrower and more honest claim, is how long product continues to look fresh. Packaging can influence appearance well before it influences actual spoilage.

Ventilation and hole pattern

The arrangement and size of vents in a shipping container, which governs airflow, cooling rate and moisture retention. Two boxes of identical dimensions can perform very differently based on hole pattern alone.

Stack height

How many containers high a pallet can be built. It is set by the compression strength of the container at its weakest moment, not at the moment it was packed.

Double stacking

Placing one loaded pallet directly on top of another, in a cooler or in a trailer. It roughly doubles the usable space. A container that softens or sags takes double stacking off the table.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a cost most growers never itemize. Losing double stack capability in a full cooler during peak season is expensive, and it does not appear on any invoice.

Repack

Moving product out of a failed or unsuitable container into a new one. It is pure un-budgeted labor, and it often happens twice over: once because the container came apart, and again to cull product that has spotted or discolored.

Delamination

The separation of a laminated or coated material into its layers, usually driven by moisture. It is a failure mode for coated fiber cartons and not one for mono material plastic, which has no layers to come apart.

BUYING, ORDERING AND MANUFACTURING

Grower shipper

A company that both grows produce and ships it, typically direct to retail chains, wholesalers or foodservice. Distinct from a broker, a repacker or a marketing agent, who do not usually own the packaging decision.

Packinghouse

The facility where harvested product is washed, cooled, graded and packed into shipping containers. The people who watch packaging fail work here, and they are frequently not the people who buy it.

Truckload minimum

The smallest order a manufacturer will produce, expressed as a full trailer. For plastic corrugated produce boxes this typically runs twenty thousand to forty thousand boxes depending on size, most commonly around twenty five thousand, usually in a single size.

Ships flat

Containers shipped un-assembled and folded so that far more of them fit on a trailer. It matters twice: on the way out, because freight per box drops, and on the way back, because recovered flat boxes take up a fraction of the space of rigid crates.

Die

The cutting tool that shapes a specific box format. Every distinct box size and style requires its own die.

Die library

The set of dies a manufacturer already owns and can run without new tooling investment. Asking whether your format is already in the library is the fastest way to find out whether you are a quick conversion or a tooling project.

Custom tooling

Cutting a new die for a format the manufacturer does not already run. The cost is normally passed to the customer. It comes up more often than expected, because box formats vary meaningfully by growing region.

Print plate

The tool that applies printed graphics to a container. Cost typically runs roughly fifteen hundred to three thousand dollars depending on complexity, and is normally paid by the customer. Immaterial on high volume, significant on a single load. It can sometimes be absorbed into pricing against a multi year commitment.

Flat printing

Printing applied to the sheet before the box is formed. Because it happens flat, it is effectively a one side print.

Bushel

A volume measure used to describe produce carton capacity, and the closest thing this industry has to a standard sizing language. Common formats run in fractions and odd increments: half bushel, three quarter, one and one ninth, 1.35 bushel for leafy greens, 1.8 bushel for cabbage and lettuce. The reasons behind the odd fractions are largely historical, and two boxes of the same nominal bushel rating can carry different dimensions from different suppliers.

Stock item

A box format a manufacturer keeps on hand rather than producing to order. Stock items are what make small trial quantities possible, since pieces can be pulled off an existing pallet.

Trial order, or sample program

A small no charge or low cost quantity, often fifty to a hundred and fifty pieces, sent so a buyer can assemble a pallet, load it with real product and put it through their own cooler and their own trucks before committing to a truckload.

LET US HELP: The reason this exists is not generosity. The most common reason a grower does not switch cartons is not price, it is the risk of changing something mid season that currently works. A sample is the only real answer to that.

TRADE, REGULATION AND RECOVERY

Closed loop

A recovery system where used packaging returns to the manufacturer and becomes new packaging of the same grade. The distinction that matters in practice is whether the manufacturer runs the loop itself or hands the material to an outside recycling company.

Take back program

An arrangement where the packaging supplier collects used packaging from the end of the supply chain, usually the retailer, rather than leaving disposal to whoever holds it last.

FUN FACT:. Take back is negotiated with the retailer, not with the grower who bought the box. That makes it a different sale to a different person.

EPR: extended producer responsibility

Legislation making the producer of a package financially responsible for its end of life, usually through fees paid into a state program. Several states have adopted EPR frameworks. Timelines, fee structures and what exactly is covered remain unsettled in most of them.

Eco modulation

The mechanism inside an EPR program that varies the fee based on how recyclable a package is. Hard to recycle formats pay more. This is where composites and coated materials get penalized relative to mono materials.

Anti dumping duty

A tariff imposed when imported goods are found to be sold below fair market value. In March 2026 a final order set an anti dumping duty of 83.64 percent on polypropylene corrugated boxes imported from China.

Countervailing duty

A tariff offsetting foreign government subsidies to an exporting industry. The same March 2026 order set a countervailing duty of 62.27 percent on the same product.

FUN FACT: Together these two orders removed most of the landed cost advantage that imported plastic corrugated boxes had held. The historical gap of roughly forty cents a box has narrowed to a few cents, if any.

Made in USA

For packaging this means the product was manufactured domestically. It is worth asking how far back in the process that claim reaches, since converting an imported sheet into a finished box in the United States is a different thing from making the sheet here.

A long established produce industry directory and credit reference. Useful for verifying who a company is. Not where anyone goes looking for packaging.
